Exercise for Mental Health Patients

How it Works

Working in the mental health environment is a specialist skill, in part because the client needs support in contemplation and preparation to change.  Our trainers work with clients to set achievable goals, ensuring that they believe in the outcomes, themselves and their abilities and thus attain the maintenance phase of the Health Belief Model.

Exercise for Mental Health Patients
Research demonstrates an important link between physical exercise and mental health; not only is exercise essential for physical health, it is an important part of achieving an improved mood state and maintaining wellbeing.  This is especially true for those who have learning difficulties and mental health issues.  Many of these clients take psychotropic drugs which have a side-effect of weight gain.  Studies have found that those clients who undergo a programme of physical activity reap significant benefits, which can include lower levels of medication, reduced levels of undesirable side-effects, improved mental well-being and a facilitated response for those resistant to treatment.

Most importantly, exercise creates an emotional openness in clients, allowing a bond of trust to form between client and trainer.  Our trainers are highly skilled in their ability to nurture this bond, which also allows the trainer to provide valuable insights to the other members of the care team; equally the insights of the care team allow the trainer to adapt the physical activity programme.  This virtuous circle improves the results in all interventions by the care team and enables the team to intervene at an early stage to prevent lapse becoming relapse and help the client achieve an improved and stable lifestyle.
