Physical Training for Hospitals and Care Homes
Ten years ago my autistic brother was a unhappy man of sixty with limited communication skills and no real control over his own life.  His frustration at being unable to express himself verbally would often manifest itself in violence.  Now, all these years later, he is a happy, healthy, smiling man looking forward to his sessions with Psychesoma.  He has benefitted both mentally and physically to a degree I would not have thought possible.

I am a consultant psychiatrist in the NHS and in a secure hospital.  I have worked with Julian Ivory and Psychesoma for the past two years.  Psychesoma provides holistic treatment for individuals with mental health problems and is very effective in relieving anxiety and depression.  Through various fitness programmes, individuals can improve both in their physical and mental states.  Psychesoma are very sensitive to client needs and work with compassion and understanding.  I would fully recommend their treatment programme.

Psychesoma delivers a beneficial service, providing a person-centred outlet for wellbeing for the residents who suffer with learning disabilities and mental health difficulties.  Over the past two years, I have noticed a substantial difference to my residents’ health and well-being and, importantly, they have gained confidence and been empowered to become the person who they have wanted to be.  Psychesoma’s work has been integral to that change.

Psychesoma becomes an extension of the care team, with the added benefit of being viewed as a neutral, external party by the clients, which allows for added comfort during interaction.  This bond of trust affords the clients the freedom and opportunity to express themselves candidly.  This added insight is shared with the other members of the care team where appropriate and benefits the clients treatment significantly.  Psychesoma go above and beyond in their work and we have always viewed them as a valuable partner in our aftercare program.

I engaged Psychesoma in several settings, working with people with Learning Disabilities and a variety of Mental Health problems, for a period of three years.  Many of these patients had experienced serious and long term mental illnesses.  They were demotivated, suffered poor levels of fitness and poor self-esteem.  Julian worked with an exceptionally positive attitude.  Working in particular with a patient suffering from resistant depression, Julian gradually coaxed him out of his room.  Rather than accept “not today” Julian would encourage him to talk in the corridor and, before he knew it, the patient would be walking up and down the corridor.  He, and many other patients, went on to develop self-motivation, lose weight and gain fitness levels that they had never experienced before.  The provision of Psychesoma helped many patients to cope with the initial drowsiness caused by their medication regimes.  Within a short time, there was a remarkable improvement in their mood and in their level of alertness.  This positivity spread into their willingness to participate in other treatment regimes and a gradual improvement in self-esteem.  A profound effect on their ability to sleep was noticed and their need for night sedation reduced.  The patients, accompanied by Psychesoma trainers, were encouraged to join local gyms, swimming pools, health clubs and a golf club.  This proved to be vital once they were discharged and needed a social network.  I would have no hesitation in recommending Psychesoma to any organisation treating people with mental illness.
